Ice Cream Bananas
Ice Cream Bananas – Ice cream banana (Musa “Ice Cream”) is a lush tropical plant named for its sweet, melt-in-your-mouth fruit. The tree, which reaches heights of 15 to 20 feet at maturity, is distinguished by its big, impressive leaves. Ice cream banana is suitable for growing in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9b through 11. The plant, which grows from underground rhizomes, may freeze to the ground during the winter, but it rebounds in spring as long as long as temperatures don’t drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Water Ice Cream banana as often as needed to keep the soil consistently damp throughout the growing season. Provide enough water to saturate the roots, but don’t water to the point that the plant stands in water. Soggy soil may cause root rot, especially during cool weather.
Prune secondary shoots, leaving only one healthy shoot for each rhizome. Remove new shoots as soon as they appear. Excess shoots decrease growth by drawing the energy from the main shoot.
Allow one secondary shoot to remain on the Ice Cream banana plant when the main shoot is about six to eight months old. As the shoot develops, it will replace the main shoot for the coming year. Cut the main shoot down to about 30 inches after harvest.
